About Hillel Milwaukee

About Hillel Milwaukee

The Hillel Foundation-Milwaukee was founded in 1967 as the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation and mandated to serve the needs of Jewish college students at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1993/1994, the Milwaukee Jewish Federation appointed a special Blue Ribbon Panel on Services to College Youth, to examine the issues involved in funding for this population. This came after several years of severe cutbacks in Jewish Federation funding allocations. The committee recommended that funding for the Milwaukee Hillel be increased and the staff expanded. In addition, it suggested that Hillel greatly increase its outreach efforts and expand its activities in cooperation with other community agencies.

In 1995, we were able to hire a full-time program director to work directly with students to create programs with a specific emphasis on student empowerment. That same year, we changed our name to Hillel Foundation-Milwaukee. This change reflected the expansion of our mission to include not only students the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, but also the 1,200 other Jewish young adults in the greater Milwaukee area.

Since its inception, Hillel Milwaukee has been a cornerstone of Jewish campus life, creating a welcoming community where students and young adults can find community, explore their connection to Judaism, and become the person they want to be. Through weekly Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations, inspiring speakers, learning opportunities, leadership development, and meaningful social experiences, Hillel has enriched the lives of thousands of students across southeastern Wisconsin. Working alongside colleges and unviersities, Hillel Milwaukee also serves as a trusted advocate for Jewish students, fostering understanding, addressing antisemitism, and helping ensure that every Jewish student feels safe, supported, and empowered to thrive on campus.
