Service & VolunteeRing

Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, is an important component to our programming at Hillel Milwaukee and there are many opportunities to get involved in service and volunteer work through Hillel. Below are an example of the many volunteer and social action opportunities we provide at Hillel Milwaukee.
Jewish Community Pantry - Students volunteer at the Jewish Community Pantry, an effort co-sponsored by the Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC and the Women’s Philanthropy of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. The Jewish Community Pantry seeks to provide emergency food to individuals and families in crisis throughout the greater Milwaukee community. The Jewish Community Pantry is the only pantry in the greater Milwaukee area that guarantees kosher food options.

Challah for Hunger - 40% of UWM students report that they are food insecure. Challah for Hunger at UWM is Hillel Milwaukee's way to combat that statistic. Once a month students gather together to braid and bake challah, and then sell it in the UWM Union. Half of the proceeds go to Mazon: a Jewish Response to Hunger, while the other half goes to an organization chosen by the students from Challah for Hunger UWM. This past year we donated the second half of the proceeds to the UWM Food Pantry.

Good Deeds Day -  Good Deeds Day is a global day that unites people from 93 countries to do good deeds for the benefit of others and the planet. This special day was started in Israel in 2007. Hillel Milwaukee has participated in this project since Spring of 2017.

Be The Match & Gift of Life - In past years, Hillel has participated in Be The Match  and Gift of Life Marrow Registry drives. Adding more members with diverse ethnic backgrounds to the registry increases the variety of tissue types available, helping more patients find the match they need. Since there's a shortage of Jewish donors on the registry right now, these organizations want to increase the Jewish donors in the registry, giving higher chances for Jews in need of a transplant.

And More! - We are always looking to increase the amount of volunteer work and service we do at Hillel Milwaukee. If you have a volunteer opportunity you would like to post, or if you have an organization you want to work with, please let Deb know at deb@hillelmke.org.
