Tikkun Olam, repairing the world, is an important component to our programming at Hillel Milwaukee and there are many opportunities to get involved in service and volunteer work through Hillel.
Jewish Community Pantry - Once a month our students volunteer at the Jewish Community Pantry, an effort co-sponsored by the Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC and the Women’s Philanthropy of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation. The Jewish Community Pantry seeks to provide emergency food to individuals and families in crisis throughout the greater Milwaukee community. The Jewish Community Pantry is the only pantry in the greater Milwaukee area that guarantees kosher food options.
Good Deeds Day - In 2017, we participated in our first Good Deeds Day through volunteering at the Community Wide Passover Food Distribution. We plan to participate again in Spring 2018 with a new project. Good Deeds Day is a global day that unites people from 93 countries to do good deeds for the benefit of others and the planet. This special day was started in Israel in 2007 .
The Sandwich Project - Held in public spaces on various universities, our Hillel students hold PB&J sandwich making events. All sandwiches are donated to local organizations that help Milwaukee's homeless population. This past year, the sandwiches were donated to the Friedens Community Ministries.
Be The Match - This past year, Hillel partnered with Chabad at UWM as well as Be The Match to hold a Bone Marrow Registry drive. Adding more members with diverse ethnic backgrounds to the registry increases the variety of tissue types available, helping more patients find the match they need. Since there's a shortage of Jewish donors on the registry right now, "Be The Match"® wants to increase the Jewish donors in the registry, giving higher chances for Jews in need of a transplant.
And More! - We are always looking to increase the amount of volunteer work and service we do at Hillel Milwaukee. If you have a volunteer opportunity you would like to post, or if you have an organization you want to work with, please let Deb know at deb@hillelmke.org.
