MEET THE CANDIDATES
Shabbat is very meaningful to me. Ever since I was little, I would light Shabbat candles every week with my mom. Now that I am away at school and can not be with her to light the candles, I feel so grateful to have found Hillel Milwaukee and have such an amazing and supportive community to continue that tradition with. I want to be Shabbat chair to continue making Shabbat events creative, fun, meaningful, and inclusive so that everyone can feel that connection and joy I love about Shabbat. As Shabbat chair, I would want to make Shabbat events a space where anyone feels comfortable coming, no matter what they believe in, their background, or their culture. Since coming to Hillel events, I have been able to connect with my Jewish heritage and identity, and I want to bring that same opportunity to others.
I have a lot of experience leading and creating activities and events through being a counselor at my summer camp, as well as the many fundraising events I ran for my high school. I have also assisted the youth coordinator of a local temple, where they modeled for me creative theme-based, interactive, and charitable Jewish programming for different holidays and events. As Shabbat Chair, I would be an asset to Hillel as I am collaborative, an outside-of-the-box thinker, and will create fun, welcoming, and engaging Shabbat programs that foster community and connection through Judaism. |
I am a Sophomore at Marquette studying International Affairs and my passions include EMS, Jiu-Jitsu and International Policy. I have an interest in continuing to learn about Israeli culture and to build a strong Jewish community at the local level. Being the Shabbat Chair interests me because I have attended thousands of Shabbat services myself throughout my life. Because of this, I am very comfortable leading services, and it gives me so much joy to do so. I’m really accustomed to lots of different beautiful prayers and melodies, and I am excited to share them with the Hillel community. I am excited to work along with Jack and to help him with whatever he needs as the Jewish Life & Learning Chair.
I am running for the Shabbat chair because I want to create a positive experience for everyone involved. As someone who celebrated Shabbat for the first time with Hillel a few years ago, I know what it is like to get involved without having much background Jewish knowledge. It was such a positive experience for me, and helped me feel more connected to Judaism and the Jewish community. I want to help others feel included in Shabbat and our community, and spread the positivity and joy that Shabbat brings.
One goal I have is to bring more music to Shabbat. As a musician, I love bringing people together through music, and Friday evenings are the perfect place for it. I would like to help everyone get involved, and make it accessible so that everyone can be included, whether or not they have prior musical experience. I would also like to bring musicians in and have a Jewish musical event in order to showcase different cultures, styles, and instruments. |
